The workshop on India’s Need for sustainable Mining: CBM & CMM was jointly organised by ICCSA and SOCLEEN to determine the technologies and knowledge available for sustainable mining in India. The agenda points of the workshop were:
- Indian Centric Strategy for reducing methane emissions from the above focus sector through cost-effective voluntary efforts and deploying known processes.
- How methane emission reduction can help to achieve climate change goals as well as to capture and profitably to use methane emissions.
- To compare capabilities, discuss challenges and review emerging technologies for monitoring methane.
- Discuss and put together sector specific efforts which India can implement with a specific time line.
- Suggest roadmap for methane monitoring guidelines development and its incorporation in India.
Recommended initiatives for controlling methane emissions:
- Development of technologies and measures for Counting, Measuring, and Mapping methane using advanced technologies such as methane detection sensors, satellite imaging, and GIS mapping tools from coal sector.
- Implementing Sustainable mining practices and methane management programs: through regular monitoring, maintenance, and training for personnel can further mitigate emissions.
- Restoration policy of destructed mines: Establishing policies and regulations that require coal mining companies to restore and rehabilitate mined-out areas can help mitigate methane emissions and minimize environmental impacts.
- Bio-transformation: Utilizing bio-remediation techniques to transform methane emissions into less harmful substances from coal mines.
- Development of green belt through plantation drive for abandoned coal mine sites: Planting trees and vegetation on abandoned coal mine sites can help sequester carbon dioxide, improve soil quality, and restore biodiversity.
